When It's Alzheimer's
Ha-ha, another victim today
It`s your turn to cry and act in a strange way
I`ll strip you of all your memories and such
Make you bitter and cold to the touch
You`ll wander and roam all through the night
While searching for your children with fright
You`ll forget all about your mom and dad
I can make you forget of the life you once had
You won’t even know how to bathe or dress
I`ll make your life miserable and oh, such a mess
You`ll do silly things and bad things, too
No one will understand what happened to you
You`ll never be able to be grownup again
You`ll start all over like a child within
I`ll make you not even care about yourself
Like your life is in time, as on a bookshelf
So, look-out, old` loved one, cause I don’t care
Who I affect, all I can say is, just beware !

A picture of Mama while staying at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center - June 1999 Walking in the door that day in June, we were told there was a party for graduation among the residents there. All the residents were dressed them in fancy attire and made their pictures. Smiling as the words floated in my head - I could not wait to get home to write this poem. Alzheimer's Queen - Look at her, dressed in purple Makeup to grace her eyes Lipstick on her lips so warm Glistening as she smiles She is the Alzheimer's Queen Not knowing what's going on Just look at her, so pretty and small All her memories are now gone She once was a daughter, a mother and a wife Not knowing we're with her now She sits and smiles in her own little world As we try to manage somehow The Alzheimer's Queen Oh, what a joy It is to see her smile Longing to hug her and keep her safe If just for alittle while That is my Mom; The Alzheimer's Queen The lady who loved me so Now she thinks she's the bell of the ball I never wanted to let her go. ~Sylvia Allison~ 2/24/03
